Up until the 1990s Honda had been known for sensible family cars, but that all changed with the development of their V-tech models which demonstrated a new performance side of the company. The 1997 Accord was re-designed as more roomy and was available with a V6 engine, but it wasn't until the following year that the fireworks really started with the launch of the Type R. This use an Accord sedan platform, but with a much stiffer body and uprated and lowered suspension on the all-round double wishbone set-up. Power came through a 134ci (2.2-litre) twin-cam 16v four-cyclinder using the latest development of Honda's V-tech system.
