The late Dale Earnhardt, known as 'The Intimidator', had long been a Chevrolet NASCAR driver and started with the Lumina in 1992. That turned out to be a dismal year for the team, so Chevy doubled its efforts for 1993 and was rewarded with the Winston Cup Championship. The Lumina, like all NASCARs, had to run the same shape as the street car, but underneath there was nothing of the stock sedan. A full metal spaceframe filled the inside, with trailling arms and Panhard rod locating the live rear axle. At the front it used adjustable double wishbones and huge anti-roll bar. The car used different springs rates and tyre sizes because of travelling around to the left constantly. The small-block Chevy with a compression ratio of 13:1 had a carburettor restriction plate to even out competition and to keep weight to 3,500lb (1587kg), kevlar body panels and Lexan windows were used.
